DAPTO/KOONAWARRA YOUTH CONNECT
Works with young
people aged 8-15 at risk of disconnecting from their school, family or
community.
This service's focus
is on intervention and prevention and is breaking new ground offering innovative
and individual support to young people
Dapto/Koonawarra Youth Connect can provide
-
Links with existing activities in the
Dapto/Koonawarra area. Outreach and work in partnership with
Koonawarra Community Centre and West Dapto Neighbourhood Centre.

Research
existing services to find gaps by talking to young people at risk, their
parents/carers and teachers to develop strategies to meet identified unmet
needs.

Provide resources for access to counselling for
issues of anger management, drug & alcohol, domestic violence and youth
suicide etc…

Develop a plan
to enhance educational development through tutoring & numeracy/literacy
assistance.

Provide
excursions to access other activities and services through the use of
Illawarra Community Services Community Bus.

Establish a
liaison with schools so that suspension can be served in a positive safe
space in the Lair within the Ribbonwood Centre or Koonawarra Community
Centre with skilled youth workers that can work intensively with young
people with aim to address issues and prevent detachment.

Provide skill
based learning for cultural activities, art, music, woodwork, drama and
dance.

Provide skill
based learning in computers, internet access and information technology.

Develop
self-esteem building through living skills programs such as cooking,
financial management, information on access to employment and further
training on health issues.

Encourage
access to mainstream youth activities, drop-in, band nights, sport,
photography, skate competitions and short film making.

Mentoring
programs with elders, university and TAFE students from similar cultural
backgrounds.
